Are you wondering how to start a blog? That’s Great. In this article, I will share with you how to start with a perfect blog and what I learned along the way and how I started off on the right foot.
Starting a blog when you are not a geek and not technical genius can be little terrifying.
The steps required to blog online can easily be put into action whether you are 20 years old or 50 years old. You will be amazed to know how simple and easy it is to start a blog when you experience the sense of achievement.
What do you need to start a blog?
You require 2 things before you get started :
- A Domain name (this will be the name of your blog i.e. digimarketingclasses.com.)
- A web hosting account (this is where your website will be live on the internet)
I made this process as short and simple for you as possible. So here’s what we will cover in this tutorial :
- Which platform to blog on
- Decide what to blog about
- Register a domain name
- Choose the Web Hosting
- Install the WordPress
- How to change your themes
- Writing your first blog post
- What to customize in WordPress
- How we make money blogging
Let’s gets started.
Step 1 – Choosing a Blogging platform
There are many platforms that can be used to start a blog like Blogger (from Google), Tumblr, Weebly and much more.
More than 90% of the users are likely to blog on WordPress.org (Self-hosted) than on Wordpess.com (hosted).
A Self-hosted WordPress is the one you need to go with and you gain the access to it from the host service provider.
Step 2 – Decide What to start a Blog on
A blog is diary style text entries of thoughts, ideas, passion, experiences and more. All at one place on the web. But when it comes to determining a topic that what should I blog about, most people get totally blank. If you are a business, this step is easy for you to a decision. In my opinion, you must have a blog that stokes your passion that is because if you start a blog on your passion that will never let you back off. Blogging about your hobby is never good because a blog is a way to which people are willing to gather helpful information.
Some key points to remember before you begin :
- A reader will always want to learn something new.
- A reader is having a goal and you are a helping hand.
- A reader must be kept entertained while reading your blogs.
Step 3 – Register a domain name.
For those of you that don’t know what a domain is, it is the address of your website, which is referred to as a URL. These are most commonly recognized as ending in “.com” “.in” “.co.in” but there are many others out there, such as ‘.biz’, ‘.org’, ‘.co.uk’, ‘.jp’, etc. My website’s domain name is ‘digimarketingclasses.com‘
Tips when choosing a domain name
- Choose a domain name of two or three short and easy words so that no one asks you to spell it out.
- Best domain names are descriptive of what your website is about. If you are a photographer then your domain name must be Yournameportfolio.com
- Make it easy to type. You don’t want other people getting your traffic if someone types in another website by mistake!
- Avoid using hyphens or punctuation marks within your URL.
- Use a domain name that ends in with ‘.com’ because people are most likely to find .com extensions.
You register a domain name by paying a small fee to a registering company. This gives you full ownership of that domain for the set period of time that you have paid for.
I personally use Godaddy for all my domains. They are the largest domain registrar in the world and I have never had a problem with them.
You don’t have to take my words and register with GoDaddy (though I highly recommend you do). Check out this list of alternate domain registrars.
Step 3 – Choosing Web Hosting
So, now when you have a domain name, you need to know how people can find you. This is where you need a web hosting.
A web hosting provider allows you to place all of the files that are needed to get your blog online. You rent disk space and bandwidth from your hosting provider. This way, your site is available for people to visit 24 hours a day.
Disk space is the space where your website is stored in. Every single letter from your site is stored here.
Bandwidth is the total amount of data that the host server allows your website to send in a month. The more traffic that your site gets, the more bandwidth your site uses.
You need to find a host that offers good support to you. This is very important because should any problems arise with your website, you need to be able to get in contact with their support team who will help you out. Finding a host that offers unlimited disk space and bandwidth will be beneficial because you started the blog not for a short period but for the long run as your website grows.
Let’s make your domain live now. Open Hostgator in a new tab and follow along.
Once you are on home page of Hostgator, Click on get started.
On the next screen, select the plan that fits you and hit sign up.
After that, you need to enter the domain name of your blog, enter the billing information and finalize a package to complete the process. We recommend going with a minimum of a year plan because that gives you the best value.
On this screen further, it will ask you to take additional services which are totally optional but we don’t recommend to take those services right away. You can always add on those additionals later on too.
Once completed, you will receive an email with login details to your web hosting control panel (cPanel). This is where you manage everything from support, emails and other things. Most importantly, this is where you install WordPress.
Step 4 – Install the WordPress
In the CPanel, you will see dozens of features. You don’t need to play around, so ignore 95% of them because you will never need to use them.
Scroll down to Softaculous Apps Installer and hit on WordPress Icon.
On the next screen, you need to click on Install button. You will be asked to select your domain name. Choose the domain from the drop-down. After that enter required details, choose username, password and hit Install.
The installation will start, once it gets completed you are automatically redirected to WordPress.
Congratulations, you have installed your WordPress site and are about to start your own blog. That was easy right?
Your WordPress login will look like this for future login :
Step 5 – Choosing the themes
The visual appearance of your WordPress blog is controlled by themes. When you first visit your blog, it will look something like this :
Customization of your blog depends on the theme. There are thousands of pre-built WordPress themes that you can install on your site. Most of them are free, while others are paid.
You can change the themes from WordPress dashboard by clicking on :
Click on the Add New button.
Now, You are good to choose any WordPress theme from the official WordPress.org themes directory.
You can sort themes by Featured, Popular, Latest and Featured Filter (Industry).
When you find the right theme that you like, simply bring your cursor on it, and it will ask you to preview or Install. After you install, the install button is replaced with an Activate button. You need to click on it to Activate the theme.
If you need a helping hand in selecting a theme, then check this out.
Step 6 – Write your first blog post

You will see a blank space where you can write your first blog post.
