start a blog

Are you wondering how to start a blog? That’s Great. In this article, I will share with you how to start with a perfect blog and what I learned along the way and how I started off on the right foot.

Starting a blog when you are not a geek and not technical genius can be little terrifying.

The steps required to blog online can easily be put into action whether you are 20 years old or 50 years old. You will be amazed to know how simple and easy it is to start a blog when you experience the sense of achievement.

What do you need to start a blog?

You require 2 things before you get started :

  1.  A Domain name (this will be the name of your blog i.e.
  2. A web hosting account (this is where your website will be live on the internet)

I made this process as short and simple for you as possible. So here’s what we will cover in this tutorial :

  • Which platform to blog on
  • Decide what to blog about
  • Register a domain name
  • Choose the Web Hosting
  • Install the WordPress
  • How to change your themes
  • Writing your first blog post
  • What to customize in WordPress
  • How we make money blogging

Let’s gets started.

Step 1 – Choosing a Blogging platform

start a blog chartThere are many platforms that can be used to start a blog like Blogger (from Google), Tumblr, Weebly and much more.

More than 90% of the users are likely to blog on (Self-hosted) than on (hosted).

A Self-hosted WordPress is the one you need to go with and you gain the access to it from the host service provider.

Step 2 – Decide What to start a Blog on

A blog is diary style text entries of thoughts, ideas, passion, experiences and more. All at one place on the web. But when it comes to determining a topic that what should I blog about, most people get totally blank. If you are a business, this step is easy for you to a decision. In my opinion, you must have a blog that stokes your passion that is because if you start a blog on your passion that will never let you back off.  Blogging about your hobby is never good because a blog is a way to which people are willing to gather helpful information.

Key points to remember before you begin :
  • A reader will always want to learn something new.
  • A reader must be kept entertained while reading your blogs.

Step 3 – Register a domain name.

For those of you that don’t know what a domain is, it is the address of your website, which is referred to as a URL.  These are most commonly recognized as ending in “.com” “.in” “” but there are many others out there, such as ‘.biz’, ‘.org’, ‘’, ‘.jp’, etc.  My website’s domain name is ‘

Tips when choosing a domain name

  • Choose a domain name of two or three short and easy words so that no one asks you to spell it out.
  • Best domain names are descriptive of what your website is about. If you are a photographer then your domain name must be
  • Make it easy to type. You don’t want other people getting your traffic if someone types in another website by mistake!
  • Avoid using hyphens or punctuation marks within your URL.
  • Use a domain name that ends in with ‘.com’ because people are most likely to find .com extensions.

You register a domain name by paying a small fee to a registering company. This gives you full ownership of that domain for the set period of time that you have paid for.

I personally use Godaddy for all my domains. They are the largest domain registrar in the world and I have never had a problem with them.

You don’t have to take my words and register with GoDaddy (though I highly recommend you do).  Check out this list of alternate domain registrars.

Step 3 – Choosing Web Hosting

So, now when you have a domain name, you need to know how people can find you. This is where you need a web hosting.

A web hosting provider allows you to place all of the files that are needed to get your blog online.  You rent disk space and bandwidth from your hosting provider. This way, your site is available for people to visit 24 hours a day.

Disk space is the space where your website is stored in. Every single letter from your site is stored here.

Bandwidth is the total amount of data that the host server allows your website to send in a month. The more traffic that your site gets, the more bandwidth your site uses.

You need to find a host that offers good support to you. This is very important because should any problems arise with your website, you need to be able to get in contact with their support team who will help you out. Finding a host that offers unlimited disk space and bandwidth will be beneficial because you started the blog not for a short period but for the long run as your website grows.

Thanks to Hostgator a highly recommended hosting provider has agreed to offer our users over 20% discount on web hosting. Check it out from here.
